Obituary

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Kenneth Dwight Alan Marl, affectionately known as Ken, in the early hours of April 5, 2024. Ken was born on July 31, 1961, in Ketchikan, Alaska, to Betty Lee Lien and Stan Marl, and raised alongside his siblings Michael, Sandra, and the late Cynthia, under the watchful care of his grandparents Anne Evenson and O.M. Lien. His early life, set against the backdrop of Ketchikan’s scenic beauty and tight-knit community, shaped the resilient and adventurous spirit he carried throughout his life.

Ken leaves behind a legacy through his four children—Jolene, Stephanie, Kenneth Jr., and Michael—and eight grandchildren. His professional life, marked by a robust dedication to hard work at the Alaska Pipeline and the Ketchikan Shipyards, reflected his strength and profound love for the natural beauty of Alaska, a place he was proud to call home.

In retirement, Ken frequently found solace and joy at on the water, fishing rod invariably in hand, often accompanied by his longtime friends Jerry Holderman and Doug Dymock. Their fishing escapades, filled with tales perhaps a bit taller than the day’s actual catches, were always infused with laughter and underscored Ken’s appreciation for life’s simpler, finer moments.

As a member of White Cliff Church, Ken’s faith profoundly influenced his approach to life, evident in his generosity, integrity, and the kindness he extended to all.

Funeral services to celebrate Ken’s life will take place on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 11 AM at White Cliff Church. Friends, family, and all those touched by Ken’s generous spirit are invited to join us in honoring a life well-lived, brimming with laughter, love, and countless tales of fishing and hunting adventures. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to White Cliff Church, honoring Ken’s enduring faith and commitment to his community.

As we bid farewell to Ken, our beloved friend, father, brother, uncle and son, we hold tightly to the cherished memories and joy he brought into our lives. Rest in peace, Ken. Your zest for life, profound love for nature, and devotion to your family continue to inspire and guide all who were fortunate enough to know you. Like the vast Alaskan wilderness he so dearly loved, Ken’s indomitable spirit will forever lead us forward.
