Obituary

Paula “Tutu” Williamson, 83, died Feb. 24, 2018, surrounded by family at her Ketchikan home.

She was born Oct. 17, 1934, in Oregon, where she grew up and met and married her husband, Tom, at age 16.

They lived and worked in floating logging camps before starting their own logging business. While residing in the remote floating logging camps, Mrs. Williamson taught her children school, cooked for the logging crew, broke ice to wash clothes, and chased away bears and wolves, her family writes.

The couple also resided in Ketchikan, where Mrs. Williamson continued to be active in her husband’s construction business. In Ketchikan, Mrs. Williamson enjoyed gardening, garage sales, collecting antiques and vintage finds, and her family.

“Every Saturday was a family meal at her house,” her family writes.

Mrs. Williamson also was interested in history, archeology, natural history and genealogy.

“The most important part of Paula’s life were people,” her family writes. “Her home was always open with a sympathetic ear, an extra bed and a warm meal. More than once, Paula and Tom helped people stranded in Ketchikan with a ticket home. Even in her old age, her home was full of toys for the great-grandchildren who were always popping in.”

Speaking of her own adventures in Ketchikan, Mrs. Williamson said: “I have had experiences and lived a life that most people only read about.”

“Tutu is missed by her family and all those whose lives she touched,” her family writes.

Mrs. Williamson was preceded in death by her son, Steven Williamson; and sister, Danille Thomas.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Williamson; children, Tom and Danine Williamson, Susan and Tom Gaffney, Elisabeth (Betsy) and Doug Miller, Dan and Shelly Williamson; and Christina and Bob Bue; grandchildren, Sharon and Lisa Williamson, Tom Gaffney, Connie Conway, Emily Staples, Rob and Joe Miller, Kaleb and Tasha Williamson, and Colin, Elias and Acacia Anglin; and great-grandchildren, Kylie, Alex, Austin, Ellie, Evelyn, Paige, Mason, Grace and Tessa.

Mrs. Williamson’s remains were interred at Bayview Cemetery near her son, Steven, in a ceremony attended by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
