Sayers P. McAlpin, 95, died Aug. 2, 2023, in Ketchikan.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1927, in Ketchikan.

He attended school in Ketchikan and at Sheldon Jackson, and earned a GED.

He was married on May, 2, 1962, in Ketchikan.

Mr. McAlpin served for six years as a U.S. Army paratrooper, attending six service schools. He was recognized for his hard work, and was promoted to the rank of master sergeant. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

In addition to residing in Ketchikan, Mr. McAlpin resided in Craig, Hydaburg, Haines and Kasaan.

He worked as a laborer at Kasaan Mines, and as a logger and a longshoreman. Mr. McAlpin also ran a seine boat.

Mr. McAlpin enjoyed totem carving, reading, cooking, hunting, fishing and watching his children’s sports activities.

He was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church.

Mr. McAlpin was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Haldane; father, Sayers McAlpin; and brother, Kenneth McAlpin.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia McAlpin; sons, Richard McAlpin and Michael McAlpin; daughters, Martha McAlpin and Michalyn McAlpin; grandchildren, Richard, Travis, Josh and Sayers McAlpin; great-grandchildren, Alayna, Zaydey and Emmett McAlpin; and foster children, Jimmie Nelson, Molly Tonella and Tim Eide.
