Alice Frances Leask Demmert, 92, died Jan. 9, 2019, in Ketchikan, surrounded by family.
She was born on Nov. 25, 1926, to James C. and Lillian Benson Leask in Ketchikan. She was a member of the Metlakatla First Nations BC (Tsimshian, Wolf Clan) and the Kaakusi.hitaan (Tlingit/“Man Who Leaves His Footprint” Clan). Her Indian name was “Sei’teeyoo.”
“Alice was a wife and homemaker, fisherwoman, cannery watchperson, and most importantly a wonderful mother, grandmother and aunt,” her family writes.
Her namesake, the Lady Alice, was built by her father.
Mrs. Demmert was a member of Ketchikan Indian Community, Sealaska Corp., and Klawock Heenya Corp.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David R. Demmert Sr. (Tlingit/Tak-Wa-Na-Dee); parents, Lillian Benson and James Conrad Leask Sr.; siblings, Olive (Wilson) Peratrovich, James C. Leask Jr., Harvey (Helen) Leask, Martha (Sam) Decker, Jessie (Robert) Hunter, Karl (Annelies) Leask, and Leslie Clark Leask (3 years old); father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Lillian Demmert; in-laws William (Florence) Demmert Sr., Embert (Edith) Demmert Sr, Arthur (Virginia) Demmert Sr., Lawrence Demmert Sr., Donald Newman and Tina Leask; and grandson, Joshua Cristobal.
She is survived by her sister, Mildred Leask Newman of Ketchikan; brother, Henry Leask of Anchorage; sister-in-law, Sharon Demmert of Seattle; children, Cheryl (Lowell) Fairbanks, Caryl (William) Williams, Mildred Demmert, David Demmert Jr., Laurel (Arthur Jr.) Williams and Karl (Tammy) Demmert; grandchildren, Laurence (Melissa) Dushane Jr., Ronald (Teresa) Fairbanks; Christina (Rick) Slovonsky, David Williams, Adam Williams, Leah Cristobal, Justna Cristobal, Justin Cristobal, Allison Demmert, Jaclyn Demmert, Arthur Williams III, Jennifer Williams (Seth Marrs), Alexander Williams (Brittany Youngberg), Jessica (Paul III) Lingley, Aimee Demmert and Michael (Emily) Demmert; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
