Obituary

Dwight McBride of Ketchikan, Alaska passed away at age 70.

Preceding him in death were his father, John (Jack) McBride (from Ketchikan), his mother Jeraldine (Jeri) Eisenbrandt, his brother, William (Bill) McBride, and his nephew, Timothy (Tim) Mills.

He is survived by sisters, Jackie Twiss, Custer, SD; Sandy McBride, OR; and brothers, Doug McBride, Proctorsville, VT; Keith McBride, Reno, NV; Dean McBride, Boca Raton, FL; and Scott McBride, Anchorage, AK; niece Jill Twiss, New York, NY; and nephews Noah, Jenson, and Grayson McBride, Proctorsville, VT.

He was born in Springfield, Oregon, and grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. But when he moved to Ketchikan he found his home. He lived and worked in Ketchikan for over 50 years.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps. When he left the Marines, he came to Ketchikan to spend time with his father, Jack. He saw opportunities there and made the most of them.

Dwight loved studying businesses and people. In his younger days, Dwight loved playing foosball and was one of the best around. He was proud of creating the first European Foosball Championship.

He established and ran restaurants, bars, game arcades, a bowling alley, a pull tab distribution company, pull tab stores, shoe stores, hotels, game routes, and dart leagues.

One of Dwight’s greatest joys in life was raising funds for Ketchikan’s charities that focused on Ketchikan’s youth. He was proud of being a mentor to them. Dwight owned and operated pulltab stands where most of the profit went to the Ketchikan charities.

He was on his own since he was age 14. He was a self-made man in the best sense. Like all of his McBride siblings, Dwight lived his life like someone from a Steinbeck novel; he built businesses, he traveled, he read, he took big risks, had some painful failures and experienced many awesome successes. He befriended and lent a hand-up to many in Ketchikan. He was always ready to offer thoughtful advice to anyone that he felt was in need of some guidance.

He was independent and loved his boat. He had such a creative and inquisitive mind, studying things like sustainable farming. He was kind, generous, and loved by his many friends. Dwight will be deeply missed by his loving brothers and sisters, his friends, and all of those who knew him.
