Obituary

Bernice Phyllis Frisby, (Haida name Guutinii, Sdaasdas clan), 93, died peacefully in Ketchikan on Nov. 7, 2023.

She was born Bernice Phyllis Edenshaw on Sept. 6, 1930, in Hydaburg, and grew up there.

"She loved to play softball in her early years,' her family writes. "She'd tell stories about playing softball and end it with, 'and then there was a fight.'

She went to grade school in Hydaburg, then to Mount Edgecumbe High School.

She married Algie Willard Frisby in Hydaburg on Feb. 27, 1948. In 1963, they moved to Wrangell, where Mr. Frisby did shrimp fishing and Mrs. Frisby worked at the shrimp cannery.

They returned to Hydaburg for a few years, then moved to Ketchikan.

Mrs. Frisby and Regina Frank were lifelong friends, working together at the Ketchikan General Hospital in housekeeping for several years. Mrs. Frisby then took a first aid class to qualify for Home Health Care.

"She loved working with the elders — bathing, changing clothes and visiting them," her family writes. "The elders and employers loved her caring touch."

Mrs. Frisby was a seamstress, and enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed watching her daughters, Carolyn, Connie and Pam, play softball, and watching professional baseball on TV. A favorite pastime was driving around Ketchikan.

Mrs. Frisby was preceded in death by her husband, Algie W. Frisby; mother, Bessie Isaacs Edenshaw; father, Patterson Edenshaw; sisters, Florence Johnson, Bertha Natkong and Anna Deeds; brothers, Anthony "Cowboy" Edenshaw, Arthur Edenshaw and Wilson Edenshaw; daughters, Sandra Lucille Frisby, Carolyn Arlene Frisby, and Patricia Ann "Patsy" Frisby.

Frisby; grandchildren, Michelle R. Edelen, Charles P. Frisby, Marie P. Frisby, Karen A. Philemonoff, David M. Frisby Jr., Algie J. Frisby, Gregory T. Frisby, Eliasica P.
