Benjamin James Tavares, 55, died July 21, 2017, in Marysville, Washington.

He was born Sept. 1, 1961, in Ketchikan. As a youth, he resided in California and Hawaii before returning to Ketchikan in 1970. He attended Holy Name Catholic School, Schoenbar Middle School and Ketchikan High School.

He was employed as a longshoreman in Ketchikan from 1980 to 2015, when he moved to Washington state. He was employed as a glass glazer in Washington.

“Benjie loved music, football and traveling to visit family and friends in Washington and Idaho,” his family writes. “He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.”

Mr. Tavares was preceded in death by his parents, Dolores Ann Tavares and William C. Tavares; brothers, Michael David Tavares and Peter Blaze Tavares; sister, Angelica Diane Tavares; and nephew, Gabrial Leon Tavares.

He is survived by his son, Benjamin J. (Jennifer) Tavares; daughter, Dajani (Jeremy) Winzer; brothers, William C. Tavares III, Christopher R. Tavares, Joseph M. Tavares, Guy M. Tavares, James R. Tavares and Matthew C. Tavares; sisters, Debra A. Tavares, Bernadette Simonsen and Lisa M. Peterson; grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 4, 2017, at Holy Name Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Bayview Cemetery.
