Karl Fredrick Leask, 88, died Dec. 12, 2017, peacefully with family members at his side at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, after a fall that led to more serious injuries.
He was born on June 11, 1929, to James C. and Lillian B. Leask in Ketchikan. He was a member of the Metlakatla First Nations BC (Tsimshian, Wolf Clan).
He was a fisherman and worked at New England Fish Company for many years, and later worked at both U.S. Post Offices in Ketchikan until retirement.
“Karl would encourage younger people to work hard and keep good work ethics,” his family writes. “He was well liked in the community and loved by his relatives. He was known as a very generous person.”
He was a devoted and active member of the St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church and St. John’s Episcopal Church.
“Karl was proud of his Scotch and Tsimshian heritage, and truly loved being part of the St. John’s church,” his family writes.
Mr. Leask was preceded in death by his wife, Annelies Fuller Leask; parents, James Conrad Leask Sr. and Lillian Benson Leask; sisters and brothers-in-law, Olive and Wilson Peratrovich, Martha and Sam Decker, and Jessie and Robert Hunter; brother, James C. Leask Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Helen Leask; brother, Leslie Clark Leask, who died at age 3; brothers-in-law, David Demmert Sr. and Donald Newman Sr.; niece, Doris Jackson; and nephews, Joseph Peratrovich, Harvey Leask Jr. and James Hunter.
He is survived by his sisters, Alice Leask Demmert and Mildred B. Leask Newman of Ketchikan; brother, Henry William (Tina)?Leask of Anchorage; and nieces and nephews, Gifford Peratrovich, Marvin Peratrovich, Leslie Leask, Karlene Leask, Carolyn Leask, Sam Decker Jr., Ken Decker, Rodney Hunter, Ricky Hunter, Judy Andrist, Cheryl Fairbanks, Caryl Williams, Mildred Demmert, David Demmert Jr., Laurel Williams, Karl Demmert, Jeff Leask, Gilbert Leask, Clifford Leask, Cindy Wagner, Donna Anderson, Bonnie Newman and Donald Newman, Jr.
A service will be scheduled at a later date, after the holidays.
Mr. Leask’s remains will be interred at Bayview Cemetery.
