Janey Kathleen Johansen Smith, 70, died on July 3, 2017 in Sweet Home, Oregon.

She was born to Max and Lillian Newman on Aug. 25, 1946, in Ketchikan.

Mr. Newman died before Janey was born. Her mother married Jack Johansen, and he adopted her and her brothers. Upon her mother's and step-father's death in 1952, she and her brothers went to live with foster-parents Charles and Dorthy Potter. After graduating from Kayhi in 1965, she married Roger Walters in Ketchikan.

She worked as a dispatcher at the Ketchikan Police Department, and for the Alaska Marine Highway as dispatcher in Ketchikan.

She married Bob Smith, and eventually moved to Anacortes, Washington; Vernonia, Oregon; and then to Sweet Home to be near her foster-mother, Dorothy Potter, at the Wiley Creek Community.

“Among other things, Janey was happiest when she was entertaining and decorating her home for holidays,” her family writes.

She was preceeded in death by her father, Max Newman; mother, Lillian Johansen; aunt, Carolyn McLeod; step-father, Jack Johansen; brothers, Micheal Johansen and Harry Johansen; and cousin, Mary Ecklund.

She is survived by her brothers, Bill (Ruth) Johansen, David Johansen and Jack (Gayle) Johansen; cousin, Michele McGill; numerous nieces and nephews; and foster-mother, Dorothy Potter.
