Obituary
Tam Eugene Murphy, 81, died Oct. 5, 2021, peacefully at Ketchikan General Hospital.
He was born on April 4, 1940, in Ketchikan. He attended Holy Name Elementary School and graduated from Ketchikan High School in 1958.
Mr. Murphy joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation, and served at Camp Pendleton in San Diego until 1961. He met some of his closest lifelong friends in the Marine Corps. After his discharge from the corps, he returned to Alaska, where he worked for KATV, as a fisherman, and as a long-time longshoreman.
Mr. Murphy met and married Patti Jo (PJ) Lamar in 1980. They spent much of their time hunting, fishing and traveling.
In addition to hunting and fishing, he enjoyed chopping wood for anyone who needed it, his family writes.
“Tam could often be seen hitchhiking along North Tongass Highway,” his family writes. “He met many new friends doing this. Family members often received pictures of him from friendly locals who picked him up and were treated to 11 miles of entertaining stories and an offer to jitterbug!’
Mr. Murphy also enjoyed visting The Landing two or three times a day for coffee and to check in with “The Ladies” and his longshore and stevedore friends, his family writes.
“Tam loved to try to knuckle wrestle with the grandkids and never lost a match!” his family writes.
Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Marie Murphy; brother, Terry Murphy; sisters, Jean, Nadine, Donna Fae and Georgie; daughter, Kelli Murphy; and wife, Patti Jo (PJ) Murphy
He is survived by his children, Shannon (Dan) Kelly, Shawn (Cristina Doyle) Murphy, Jeremy Lamar and Tugg Murphy; grandchildren, Kenny Terpsma, Jesse (Kat Sweetman) White, Alissa (Antoine Wilson) White, Alison (Jeff) Jones, Emily Kelly, Laura (Darwin) Alvarez, Matt Kelly, Chevell Lamar and Natalie Duncan; great-grandchildren, Rylan, Parker and Maddison Jones, Asani Wilson and Niana Alvarez; in-laws, Janealle Sands, Kelly (Terry) McDonald and David Thoms; and numerous nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
A celebration of life will be planned for spring of 2022.
